Maybe he didn’t really always make me feel the way I remember it.

In today’s fast-paced society and lifestyle, the separation of church and state translates more and more into the separation of church and state-of-living. The contrast between a normal day of school, work, play and an hour spent at church or an hour praying is up to an extreme which makes it harder to transition between part a and part b. Though many people embrace the change – relaxing as it is to slow down suddenly and take a moment to analyze your existence and your true importance in this world – it’s getting harder and harder to deal with the way religion fits in the way we live our lives.
I was in church at midnight last night for Easter, and as everyone was deep and melancholic with the significance of what was being said, I looked up at the ceiling and hoped Jesus might tell me a joke instead. It’s hard to not feel disrespectful at this point – which in fact, is the whole dilemma. Does religion have to be so serious? Can’t I have casual conversations with God? Wouldn’t God like to hear my latest school / sexual / friendship related anecdote? Those are the things we deal with day to day; isn’t it more helpful to discuss them, think about them as a completely moral being would (God); or should we stick to our generic prayers every night, and our half-hearted wishes of global peace and stopping world hunger?
In essence, I’d like to not feel guilty about looking towards God or Jesus as more approachable, easy-going beings. I’ve never seen the point in being terrified of them – you’re more likely to lie; and what good is it if you do a good deed because you were scared of God watching you at the moment – or just feeling that perhaps you haven’t done one in a while and God was starting to get mighty angry? Jesus was a man created in the image of his time – what would his reflection be for our time? There are only a certain amount of things we can stop doing as human beings living in the 21st century. Refraining from a good pick-up line is not one of them. Although you shouldn’t try to use it on Jesus, it would help to know he’s on your side.
Happy Easter!

You move,
I am a point of reference on a map;
I am at zero meridian as you consume the longitudes.”
